Description: The complexity of image processing algorithms using mathematical computations increases with the nature of the image to be processed and the desired result. A hardware implementation of these algorithms for the needs of real-time and embedded systems improves performances. This work proposes a new graphical tool for designing image and video processing embedded systems, called VIP DESIGN (Video and Image Processing Design). The novelty of the approach is that it bypasses the shortcomings of existing languages by providing a high level of abstraction through two kinds of diagrams: structural diagram and filter edition diagram. It also allows formal verification using the CADP toolbox, as well as automatic code generation for ASIC and FPGA implementations. The approach is illustrated on a system detecting the aiming directions in a shooting simulator, and on a blob detection algorithm in grayscale video streams.

Conclusions: VIP DESIGN offers to the designer of real-time systems a graphical representation that facilitates the visibility of the designed system, provides verification features by a connection to CADP, and makes possible a rapid prototyping without knowledge of the hardware.
